Last Friday, the 5th December 2014, saw members of BiblioWorks staff in Villa Abecia to inaugurate our twelfth library. As International Day of the Volunteer, it seemed apt for us to be beginning the process of sending enthusiastic volunteers to this rural community in the south of Bolivia.

The ceremony involved the presentation of around 800 books, interactive CDs and educational games to the town, which will take pride of place in the new library building, the construction of which will be completed in the next month. Speeches discussing the importance of the library to the town were made by various notable figures, including the Mayor Jhonny Ortega, our own Director, Maritza Valdez, and the leader of the Villa Abecia Library Committee. Profesor José Luis Garcia Martinez, the Director of Education for the District, and Mayor Ortega were present for the signing of the documents to complete the ceremony. Don Miguel Gorena, the Director of Culture for Villa Abecia and invaluable proponent for the implementation of the library, chaired the proceedings.

The event was well attended by officials from various levels of local government, as well as a strong crowd of local people. In attendance included the President of the local Civic Committee, members of the local council and teachers from Colégio 23 de Marzo, all of whom sought to demonstrate their support for this fantastic new community resource.

We were delighted to watch as excited children immediately began reading the new books and asking questions about the opening of the library next month, demonstrating what a valuable new opportunity it will provide for the people of Villa Abecia.

Thank you again to all of the generous people who donated money to support the opening of this new library through our Indiegogo page or through our website.
