It is with heavy but full hearts that we say goodbye to one of our most enthusiastic, giving, and dedicated volunteers, Anja! Anja spent six weeks at the school of Santísma Trinidad in the rural community of Pampa Aceituno just outside of the city of Sucre working with children from K-7th grade. She created and ran literacy clubs in which the class read books together and learned about grammar, punctuation and how to read with confidence and passion as well as teaching English classes. Although six weeks doesn’t seem like a long time, she was able to form a very deep bond with both the students and the teachers, so it was difficult for everyone to say goodbye, but she leaves a legacy behind her that will continue for many years to come.
Her going away party was themed “La Fiesta de Libros” and featured numerous literacy-based games for the children to play and finished with a very well-appreciated cake baked especially by Anja and other volunteers. It was a wonderful experience to see so much love and trust between our volunteer and the people she served. Thank you for all of your hard work, Anja! The community of Pampa Aceituno will not soon forget it!
